The Deprived Official Trailer (2015)

Film Magazine FINAL Draft

Film Magazine FINAL Draft

Above is the FINAL draft of my film magazine "Lense". The adjusments from the last draft consist of the elimination of the transparent effect of the picture. This gives Kearse more colour. The grey gradient has been defined to match the image and to benefit the sell-lines that were otherwise a little hard to read over the black/grey nature of the gradient.

Overall, I am happy with the final draft as I believe it shares many common codes and conventions with real film magazines such as "Empire". I infact to my influence from one particular issue of the UK's well-known film magazine (as seen below).  I feel the look and the connotations of the Masthead give off strong imagery linked to the movies/cinema which help to immediately establish this magazine as a movie/film magazine. The Splash uses the same font as on my trailer and poster helping to establish it's connection to the film's brand and to help widen it.

I feel the header and bottom bars help to bring a sense of A listers to the magazine increasing it's reputation as a leading film magazine. The various sell lines help to promote the inner workings of the magazine, again with some pretty big names to help the magazine seem bigger. The Splash "SPILLS HIS DEPRIVED SECRETS" I believe brings a sense of intimacy from Kearse to every individual reader which I believe will help attract more readers in thinking Kearse is talking directly to them.

I feel the magazine heralds all the normal codes and conventions in refering to a Pug, Splash, Barcode, Image, Header/Footer bar etc. And to have each one of these features makes me believe that I have made a normal, conventional cover.

Film Magazine Draft Three

Film Magazine Draft Three

To thr left is my updated version of my film magazine. I believe I have succeeded in trying to limitise the space take up by the sell lines which gives me more space to experiment with. I have also imported the image I believe most benefits the Splash and attitude my magazine would want. I do however need to edit the photo on Adobe Photoshop. I would want to eliminate the transperant nature of the photo and hopefully the border too to ensure the photo fits and blends in with the cover as much as possible. I do however feel I am very close to concluding the editing of the magazine as I feel I am close to making the final product.

Objective for next draft:
  • - Refine image
  • - Ensure the border is eliminated

Film Magazine Draft Two

Film Magazine Draft Two

To the left is my second draft of my film magazine "LENSE". The main adjustments are the sell-lines. At the moment the cover the whole space on the left hand side. I however feel this wont be the case in the third draft as I want to make them consise so I can have more space for the main image I plan to add later. In discussion of a main image I believe it would be of Will Kearse possibly whispering to the camera in some way, this hopefully will give off a sense of secrecy and intimacy from Kearse to the reader. I have also put a border on the wording after the Splash to show the wording through the darkness, hopefully giving off the imagery of the world of violence rising to take over the world.  I plan, in my next draft to have some form of image, probably not edited, but to just see how it would fit. I do want, as explored above to adjust the sell lines on the left hand side and to hopefully ensure they dont take up too much space.

Poster FINAL Draft

Above is my FINAL draft of the poster for my fictional film "The Deprived". For me the last adjusments were really benefical. Firstly, the second tagline "JUDGEMENT DAY IS COMING" for me can hopefully emphasis that The Deprived is of the post-apocalyptic genre. I believe it has strong connotations with the Bible making it quite widespread in terms of it's connections. I feel the spreading of the Billing Block gave me the ability to show more of the project's main character Adam. This for me was essiential as the audience need to know of him before going to see the film, to hopefully gain a sense of sympathy or intrigument for his harrowing position in the poster. The critical comments for me were to mimick a dying mans last thoughts, as if they were scribed into a wall before his last breath. I feel having well-known film magazines giving their approval would entice more people to go and watch the film. The red, blood stained title according to one peer"gives off a sense of the post-apocalyptic. The final edited image is supposed to rally support and sympathy for Adam in his weak, horrific and terrifying position, which hopefully will drag them to go and see the film in the cinema.

Poster Draft Two

On the second draft of my poster I have been able to add a nice image witha edited sky which I hopefully will give off a sense of the project being post-apocalyptic. I have added a visible billing block, but I believe I would need to stretch it out to the ends of the poster. I have also added a Twitter reference to which I believe can help the audience feel more connected with the brand of The Deprived. I have also emphasised that the brand has a website and this will hopefully make the on-looker be able to connect and associate it'self with the brand. I hope to maybe adjust the bold, big release date at the top of the poster because one piece of feedback stated it is maybe "out of place?". This I feel will mean I would adjust it so it is a another tagline which will hopefully emphasis the film's genre as post-apocalyptic.

Poster Draft One

Here is my first draft of my film poster. It lacks any image or any variation of colour. These were the main adjustments for my second draft. I also plan to involve a Billing Block to my second draft. I believe this is essiential as my early audience feedback has told me that the poster "needs a billing block". The image is also a must, and I plan to have a photo taking up the whole poster with possible critical comments.

Please refer to my previous drafts for the main differences and improvements

"Lense" | Main Source of Influence

"Lense" | Main Source of Influence

To the left is my main source of influence for my magazine "Lense". Here is the April 2015 edition of the UK's leading film magazine "Empire". Its layout and colour scheme majorly influenced my choices in the drafting stages of my magazine.

Firstly the big, expanded Masthead which covers the width of the page dominates the upper parts of the cover. Its big contrasting colour differs from the image, yet it helps to segment the page with the red in the footer and subsidiary text.

The bold Main Image takes up approximately 4/5 of the page which brings the on-lookers eyes to the image, which is it's job to be the most eye catching feature of the page and to promote the boldest feature in the magazine.

The limited subsidiary texts do enough to promote the inner and less aware features by simply saying "Game of Thrones" the magazine brings in more readers due to it's immense viewership and fanbase. With promised features on topics such as "Ultron" the magazine hits again to a very, very large fan base in the Marvel world adding to the potential readership for this issue.

The three main colours used in the simple colour scheme do well to differenate the different promoted features on the cover adding to a concrete structure, making the cover successfully layed out. The transparent text in the Splash suggests the film will have a mysterious underlying to it and the background suggests a war with flying debris and smoke adding a mixed grey backtone. This film does successful bring more readers and it successfully promotes it's big feature to the on-lookers .

To conclude this issue of Empire successfully promotes the film Terminator Genisys aswell enticing on-lookers who have just seen the issue on the shelves. It's stylish and dangerous looking nature is also attract on the eye with a basic, yet nice to look at, colour scheme. It does it's job well, as a successful promotional tool for the film industry.

Evaluation Question 1 | Film Trailer

In what ways do your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

i - How I used real media texts
ii - How I developed real media texts
iii - How I challenged real media texts

The following video explores these areas on the topic of my trailer...

The following video goes further to explain how the characters in my trailer go against stereotype. Neither one follows the stereoypical character arc of a hero, making my characters unique and against the normal convention.

The Deprived | Trailer Draft No.2

The Deprived | Trailer Draft No.2

To help and compare the first two drafts of my trailer, below is the very first draft as seen in the previous blog and below it is the current second draft. This way I feel it would be easier for you to understand and notice the differences between the two.

And here is the new, updated, second draft...

The distinct differences are as follows:
- The next sequence which features the bare bones of the narrative in the trailer
- Establishing shots at the end of the radio segment helping the audience to understand time has passed and that times have changed on Earth

The shots are without the distinct pounding soundtrack as heard in the first draft as I at this point feel more editing and shrinking is needed on those shots which currently take the trailer to around 90 seconds. Asynchronous dialogue of the script will also be needed to help to assist the narrative making the trailer seem more complete. On top of this sequence I hope to have asynchronous dialogue over the top of a heartbeat esque soundtrack. In draft 3 I hope to also introduce inter titles which would help to add order to the concluding stages of my trailer. As well as all of this I would hope to also have shot the final few shots of the trailer to at-least begin the conclusion the trailer.

The Deprived | Trailer Draft No.1

The Deprived | Trailer Draft No.1

Below is my group's first draft of my trailer at only 46 seconds long I do feel there is large amounts to be added.

At the end of the sequence you hear the start of the next sequence with the pounding soundtrack that will introduce the main character - Adam - to the audience in modern day. In the opening sequence I feel we have successfully given the audience the panicking atmosphere Adam now finds himself in. The radio extracts most made with a recorder were most voiced by me and were surprisingly easy to edit, and I feel they sound realistic and help to bring a sense of panic to the audience. My group and I believe that the darkness that surrounds the shots help to confuse the viewer adding to the code of enigma, I also think it makes them think what is going on?. This sequence promotes the idea that the audience shouldnt be fed everything that they should in effect work for their understanding, in this example we dont show them the panic, we let them hear it, this we hope will help to make the next sequence (when they eventually do see the panic) more powerful.

Film Magazine Draft One

Film Magazine Draft No.1

To the left is the first draft of my magazine cover, in creating the magazine I was heavily inspired by Bauer Media's 'Empire' of which dominates the film magazine market. This gave me enough belief and motivation to attempt to replicate their codes and conventions (see blog entitled 'Magazine Cover Analysis')

Starting with the Masthead I wanted something original and a name that possibly hadn't been used in previous A2 work. 'Lense' has strong connotations with the camera lense making the name heavily linked with the magazine industry. Up to now there is no Main Image to balance it's eye-catching nature against, thus making the Masthead the most eye-catching feature of the page. I replicated 'Empire's use of making the Masthead take the whole width of the page making it very bold and eye-catching. The font I believe replicates the 1950's vintage lighting they used outside cinemas/movie theaters to promote films which made me feel the Masthead as a whole relates to the movie industry quite heavily.

The header bar was based on a feature read in 'Empire' it's font again is one from the internet which I feel helps to the differentiate the header bar from the Masthead.

The Splash is obviously to promote the overall film package I constructed, it helps to promote the brand by giving it coverage in a distinguished film magazine. It holds the same font as that seen in the trailer and the font I wish to have on my film poster. It is designed to a large size to make the reader aware of the exclusive coverage the magazine has of the brand. underneath the Splash I have the footer and some text which assists the Splash. The layout of the footer was influenced by the latest edition of 'Empire'. The dots help to distinguish to the onlooker the different features in the issue.

The pug (although yet not quite distinguished) I feel helps to promote the film brand again aswell as attracting more on-lookers who now feel they have a chance to win tickets, suggests more sales.

Finally the gradient in the back ground was influenced by my desire to have the Splash reaching out from the darkness, and this is something I also want in my second draft. The gradient I feel is also something that has been seen in real media texts, such as 'Empire' and 'Total Film'.

On the left is the actual cover that I felt demanded replication. On my future drafts I plan to have a similar header bar, as I feel it looks far my professional and more conventional than the one my magazine has of present and I desire a eye-catching, 3-D looking picture that would rise from the darkness of the gradient.

Real Media Text Research | Empire Front Cover Analysis

Real Media Text Research | Empire Front Cover Analysis

"Empire" is one of Bauer Media's most well-known brands with a supposed circulation of 145.177 (ABC July - December 2013) in print and digital versions. It oozes the quality of which fellow film magazines aspire too and it is heralded as the "best film magazine in the UK".

You can see the quality of the magazine in the issue displayed to the right, of which promises special, exclusive features and a marvelous cover design.

The cover itself is dominated by its Main Image and the adapted Masthead, which both are trying to resemble Guillermo Del Toro's franchise of "Hellboy". This particular issue is used as a promotional device for the franchise giving it pivotal coverage in the magazine to it's devoted film lovers in exchange for a high end exclusive which attracts more readers then per usual.

The Masthead is in it's usual big red font, but this time adapted into a fire covering which helps to expose the reader to Hellboy's dark back story and his fiery, passionate personality. It also is alot more eye-catching then usual making on-lookers naturally attracted to the cover. The size of the Main Image proves the high end nature of the exclusive as explored above. It heralds a large fan base and a devoted cult following and this is why the size is increased. The magazine also wanted to show off their exclusive symbolising their dominance in the film magazine market, but they also wanted to symbolise Hellboy's large and intimidating nature, adding this with his large clinching fist, it does this well. This does mix well with the black background which helps to contrast against the red fire, but it also suggests that Hellboy has a dark background and by going to watch the film you'll find out all the details.

The magazine's conventional layout is again presented, and possibly over used when looking at the two Pugs (one being exclusive for the digital version). Pugs help to try and seduce the reader in wit news and features completely unrelated to anything else on the cover. In this case the main Pug attempts to bring in readers with notions about "sex" which obviously is completely unlike anything else of the cover.  The second Pug as said above is exclusively for the online, digital, versions making the experience of reading the magazine far easier then just picking it off the shelves as it promises more then pictures and words.

The sub-text of the middle left is used to act as a last ditch attempt to attract any 'on the fence' on-lookers, by offering news and features off topic to that in the Splash.  Examples here consist of the films in the Indiana Jones and Hobbit franchises. This is also used to bring the devoted fans of those brands to buy the magazine.

"The Deprived" | Shoot Video Diary No.2

As continued on my previous post here are some more 'behind the scenes' clips from our first shoots.

Here we see my group debating a particular camera angle and quarreling over the fire. Whilst fellow group member Lloyd Pocknell makes a joke whilst preparing the mise-en-scene...

Below is a multi-angled drafting version of a shot we will eventually use in the trailer. You could view this shot as a very early version of a shot that would eventually be seen in the trailer. Please note: a different camera and different sound equipment will be used in the real trailer

Whilst conducting the first shoot I found it benefiting to record some parts of the shoot. This I believe helps to depict the process of the first shoot and possibly the development the group undertook during the various shoots.

Here is a clip of the group preparing and shooting a early shot from the trailer.

Here is another clip where we prepare for a over the shoulder shot, similar to the one above. Here you can see our group preparing for the shot, whilst undergoing some light hearted banter.
